Summary

President Donald Trump's multi-front attempt to remake America and the world is meeting with mixed success. His administration has ended the crisis at the border and is aggressively moving against illegal migrants. But elsewhere the picture is murky. The war in Ukraine rages on, the Middle East continues unsettled and above all, his restless back-and-forth on tariffs and international economics is causing profound damage to faith in U.S. economic stability. And some of his actions suggest an authoritarian style inimical to American values.   On this episode of Free Expression, Gerry Baker sits down with Admiral William McRaven, former head of US special operations, to discuss Trump's leadership. McRaven draws on the themes of his new book, "Conquering Crisis: 10 Lessons to Learn Before You Need Them," to assess the first 100 days of Trump's second term, but also the wider challenges of leadership in crisis. Took a slightly unexpectedly long sabbatical, but I'm delighted to say that free expression

0:21.7

is back. We'll be here weekly analysing and dissecting the major issues that are confronting

0:27.4

America and the world. And, well, in the last month or so, did we miss anything? Well,

0:32.3

since we last spoke, the stock market's down about 10%, the dollars down about 5%, bond yields are

up. And in coming weeks,

0:37.9

we'll talk about the ongoing economic crisis that has greeted President Donald Trump's plans

0:44.1

to remake the world economy. But of course, there's plenty of other things going on here

0:48.8

in the US and around the world. And this week, we're going to restart the podcast by looking

0:54.1

at what's happening with

0:55.2

national security here in the United States and our partnerships around the world. War continues

1:00.7

in Ukraine. Sadly, President Trump has not yet been able to bring an end to that crisis.

1:06.2

Uncertainty continues about what may happen in the Middle East, particularly with Israel and its continuing

1:12.3

war against its enemies. And of course, whether or not how much the United States gets involved

1:16.2

in an attempt to either strike a deal with Iran or maybe to take military action there. And of course,

1:23.4

wider geopolitical issues continue to loom large with China. And of course, part of Donald Trump's

1:29.0

efforts with his tariff regime is to sort of enlist the rest of the world in America's larger

1:35.3

confrontational struggle with China. So to look at all of those issues. And this week, I'm delighted

1:40.3

to say that I have a really admirable guest to take us through those, and that is

1:45.8

Admiral William McRaven. Admiral McRaven is a forming Navy SEAL who served as the commander
