This episode is for Eastern Greeder who asked me to tell the story of some real life pirates.

Yikes! Pirates! You may be asking, are they real? When did they live? What were they really like?

Well, let's start at the beginning. Yes, pirates are truly real. Pirates have been around since

ancient times, well, pretty much since ships became a thing. There have been pirates and there

are still pirates today. In reality, pirates are just robbers. There's nothing really

fanciful about them. Although they have been romanticized subjects of movies and books and plays,

they really are quite simply bad guys who like to steal from others.

Since there have been pirates for so long and we can't learn about all of them,

I've chosen to concentrate the stories of this episode on the pirates who lived in one specific

time period. A period called the Buccaneer period. Sometimes pirates are called Buccaneers.

Some of you may have seen movies about pirates. There is even one series of movies that is

centered around a pirate named Jack Sparrow. Well, that fictional character is kind of a conglomeration

of several real life pirates, but their lives and adventures were really nothing like what is

portrayed in those movies. So let's start with a historical backdrop of this time period that the

pirates, well, they had their heyday, which was supposed to be the setting of those movies about

pirate Jack Sparrow. The time period we're going to explore together in this episode is from about

1600 to the early to mid 1700s. This was the colonial period in America and in other places
