Summary

It's often joked that Trinity Sunday is "the preacher's nightmare." But while the Trinity can be viewed as the most arcane and inaccessible Christian doctrine, it's also the most ordinary and obvious. Every Catholic invokes the Trinity whenever he crosses himself in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Moreover, every single baptized person has been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Through baptism we've been sealed by the Trinity, brought within its dynamic, and sent out on mission.

0:51.3

it shouldn't be the preacher's nightmare. I think it should be the preacher's great

opportunity because I always tell our students here that every Sunday is

0:58.3

Trinity Sunday. So here's a peculiar thing about the Trinity. At one of the same

time, the Trinity is the most arcane and extraordinary of Christian doctrines

1:09.0

and the most ordinary. It's simultaneously the most inaccessible of doctrines

1:16.4

and the most obvious. Now what do I mean? Well on the one hand, there is a highly

1:23.8

developed technical language regarding this great mystery. I've been teaching

1:28.8

the Trinity out here for 20 years. Terms like person, imminent relation,

circummissession, procession, etc. etc. The finest mind in the church from

origin and Gregory of Nissa to Augustine and Anselm to Thomas Aquinas and John

1:46.2

Henry Newman have wrestled with the meaning of this great mysterious dogma. But on

the other hand, the most ordinary Catholic simply and regularly invokes

Trinity every time he crosses himself, commencing prayer in the name of the
