Director Joseph Kaczynski has put his specific stamp on big action with films,

such as Top Gun Maverick and F1, which is the Best Picture nominee at this year's Oscars.

For his treat, Kaczynski looks back on something that stirred his interest in visualizing emotion.

I am Joseph Kaczynski and this is the treat.

I was 22 years old. I was very lucky to get a rent-controlled apartment on the Upper West

side. All I had was my saxophone, so I needed to get

something to furnish the place, and I happened to live next to the Salvation Army. So I went down there

and found a wasaily chair for you furniture aficionados, but the other thing I found was a piece

of art, and it was a reproduction of an Edward Hopper painting called Office in a Small City.

If you know what this picture is, it was something that, for whatever reason, resonated with me,

but it's a man in this kind of spare

room overlooking New York City and very much felt like me at that moment, a man kind of

alone with his ideas and imagination, which very much is kind of the life of a director.

Yeah. It is a very striking kind of architectural image,

but you find yourself like great art really zeroing in on this man and the expression on his face,

which is very unknowable, but there's something going on in there.

And it's just obviously the sign of great art

that you can kind of project a whole story behind a singular image.

You know, I went to architecture school after engineering.

That's what I was doing in New York.

So I studied architecture for three years.
