Summary

Jemma and Marina were thrilled when Labour MP, Jess Phillips, agreed to take time out of her mad diary for a proper chinwag.

The Trawl ladies were fascinated to know how it feels being a female MP during such febrile times and found out what motivates her to keep going. At time of record, Rishi Sunak, hadn't surprised everyone by calling the election so unexpectedly early but Labour were in election mode nonetheless, and Marina and Jemma took the opportunity to find out what Jess makes of Natalie Elphicke's defection from the Tory party and, how it felt when she quit the front bench in 2023 over Keir Starmer's stance on Gaza, after voting in the Commons for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

They discuss the work she does in her role as Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, and her podcast with Beth Rigby and Ruth Davidson, Electoral Dysfunction and ask the question everyone wants answered - will Labour become more 'left' if/when they get into power.

Enjoy

someone who has served as a Labour MP since 2015,

called Electoral Dysfunction. There's sort of a tiny little hint of filth in that I thoroughly

approve. So today, and we'll talk about that later, but today the trawl meets Jess Phillips. So welcome

1:14.0

along to the troll. Thank you so much for giving up your time. We know you are one of the busiest

1:18.0

ladies in the UK. And I just want to add to that intro and build a little more on what

1:25.1

you're about for those who don't know. And I'm going to

1:27.5

speak for me personally as well because I became a Jess Phillips fan when you gave this speech

in Parliament about five years ago. It is insulting on every level that our care workers, our nurses,

1:41.4

our teachers, there's so many people who don't earn over £30,000. So I really think that

1:48.1

this would need to be revisited. And perversely, I have met many people since I was elected,

1:56.7

none before. I thought I'd met posh people before I came here, but I'd actually just met people

who eat olives. I'd met posh people before I came here, but I'd actually just met people who eat olives.

I have met lots of people who earn way more than £30,000, who have literally no discernible skills.

Not even one since I have been in politics. Not necessarily in this place, although there's
