The room was quiet. Rose of chairs sat bolted to the floor beneath fluorescent lights.

Their occupants rigid and expectant.

Among them, seasoned agents, profilers, investigators still in training,

people who had seen a great deal and believed they understood violence.

None of them were prepared for what came next.

At the front of the room, a tape recorder waits.

No briefing and no intro, just a simple instruction, to listen.

And when the tape begins to play, it doesn't sound like fiction.

What fills the room is human terror, recorded in real time during the final moments of a young

girl's life.

Some agents stare straight ahead.

Others lower their eyes.

A few stand and pace.

This recording is used as a lesson,

a reminder of how far cruelty can go

and how ordinary the men behind it once appeared.

The voices on that tape belonged to two men who blended in, who drove familiar roads, hunted in plain sight, used a van as a mobile chamber

of torture, carrying tools not for work, but for pain. What they were hearing in that room was not the beginning of their story.

It was the end.
