I'm Josh Carney. The long snapper position isn't a glamorous one in the NFL by any means.

Often it's an unheralded one, rarely talked about,

unless mistakes are made.

Those mistakes are usually disastrous.

But it's also an important one for NFL teams.

Football teams in general, I should say.

Without a steady long snapper, the kicking and punting game on special teams can go absolutely haywire.

While the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't have any true issues per se at the long snapper position last season with Christian Kuntz, there were some dicey

snaps and some kicking game struggles from kicker Chris Boswell that seemingly has the battery

of Kuntz, punumthor Presley Harvin a third and Boswell all under competition this off season.

Though Kuntz remains the lone long snapper on the roster for now.

The Steelers have done their due diligence in recent months,

trying out four long snappers last December,

and then hosting veteran tight-end-turn long snapper Nick Boyle in their rookie mini-camp in early May.

Now the Steelers are inviting XFL long-snapper Antonio Ortiz in for a tryout

after he was one of the top long snappers in the Spring League in recent months.

Those developments should certainly put Kuntz on notice entering the heart of the summer. Even after signing him to a

one-year contract in February and seemingly being set at the position due to Kuntz's

experience and familiarity, the moves to turn over every stone at the position

by GM Omar Khan follows his off-season mantra of looking at competition wherever they can. Now that doesn't mean Kuntz is going to be out of a job

at the end of August, but it does put him on notice, forcing him to be at his very best
