Early on in day three of the 2026 NFL draft, many within the fan base of the Pittsburgh

Steelers were up in arms after the selection of Iowa wide receiver and return specialist

Caden Weegean in the fourth round at number 121 overall.

Immediately, the calls were for being way too early to draft a

returner, concerns about his fit as a receiver at the next level, and more questions about GM

Omar Khan and what the plan was for the Steelers in this draft. That type of knee-jerk reaction stuff

is normal, but it hasn't slowed down in the days since with

the Weegean selection. You'd think after years of watching the Steelers be behind the times in the

kick and punt return game that drafting an elite weapon in that role, one that dominated big-time

college football the last two years, would excite the fan base, especially in today's NFL,

where special teams are so important.

That isn't the case, though. Screams of too early and waste of a pick continue to resonate.

It's frustrating to say the least. As a guy that studied Weegean in death, wrote the scouting report on him, saw him in person for a week at the Shrine Bull in Dallas, and pounded

the table for him throughout the pre-draft process, the initial reactions are frustrating, to say the

least. He showed at the Shrine Bowl he's more than just a return specialist. He's a dynamic

route runner that just needs an opportunity outside of a basic Iowa offense.

He'll make his name in the return game, though, and the impact will be large.

He won the Jet Award two years in a row in college, the only player in college football

history to ever do that.

That matters. Under new special teams coordinator, Danny Crossman, he'll have a chance to change games
