There was talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers defense being historic and possibly the best ever coming into the season,

especially after all the pieces the franchise added and the money that was spent on that side of the football.

Instead, the Steelers defense has largely been a disaster.

Sure, they had a pair of five turnover games against the Patriots and Colts,

giving them two big-time wins against AFC powers. But the success has been too far and few between. It should lead the changes this

offseason, particularly from a coaching staff perspective. And if that's going to be the case,

the Steelers shouldn't wait to make a change to the top defensively and get rid of Terrell Austin.

He's in the final year of his contract,

and the defense is regressing. The Steelers found themselves in a similar situation back in 2023,

and they ultimately fired Matt Canada after offensive players were grumbling about the scheme,

and the performance of the unit was as bad as it gets. That's where the Steelers find themselves

right now with Austin and the defense.

Players have questioned the scheme and are just out of answers.

It feels like a breaking point for the defense.

The move to let Austin go early might just be arranging deck chairs on the Titanic,

but you have to try something and give a new voice an opportunity to call plays defensively.

Maybe that voice is someone like Gerald Alexander.

The Steelers have to do something.
