Examine last Sunday's box score and you'll see Nick Herbig credited with one sack.

He should have had two.

Herbig made the play to help seal the Steelers win, forcing Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz into an intentional grounding on their final possession.

It was a big-time play lost to the box for a penalty on Wentz and not a sack for Herbig.

It should be. He sacked the quarterback. The only reason why he didn't was because the quarterback threw the ball

away and drew a penalty because of it. As our Matthew Marksey floated in our chat at the time,

the NFL should change the rules and its scoring to credit the defender for a sack in those

moments. And I completely agree. It's not even a no-play situation.

The play counts, and there's a loss of downs, which is done to prevent quarterbacks from

gaming the system by getting to replay the down. But it also cheats the player out of a rightfully

earned sack.

In 2024 alone, there were 34 such intentional grounding calls.

That's 34 sacks taken away from defenders.

And that matters when looking at NFL resumes and production and awards and the paydays

that come along with it all.

I don't know exactly how it would get scored with technically a pass attempt and a sack on the

play, but there's surely some way to make that math work. Give Herbeig and the others to play
