The news that Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard landed on injured reserve Thursday wasn't at all surprising as he continues to recover from a broken pinky,

suffered on a snap in training camp August 5th.

It doesn't make it any less disappointing, though, as the anticipation and excitement surrounding Howard was really starting to build leading up to the preseason.

With the injury, Howard missed all of the preseason.

Now, he could miss a huge chunk of the season two, depending on if or when the

Steelers want to bring him back. Maybe it could be a good thing to have Howard take a red shirt

year after all. Sure, he won't get many valuable reps in practice while he's on the IR. But the

chances of him seeing those valuable reps each week in the season as the team prepares

for its games was slim already, especially if he was QB3. He'll be able to focus strictly on learning

the playbook further, better learning the ins and outs of the system and really honing in on how
