i'm Josh Carney coming into the free agency period this offseason,

there were a number of big-name defensive linemen that made sense for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That would plug a major hole in the roster. Turns out, the price tags were through the roof,

and the Steelers didn't go on a shopping spree. That disappointed many, and understandably so. But after seeing the

amount of money guys were getting, the Steelers were smart to not get involved in that type of free

spending. Instead, they pivoted and have done well to add experienced veteran defensive linemen

to the fringes of the roster, shoring up depth and providing a bit of

a cushion at the position for the NFL draft. Names like Daniel Icaalu, Isaiah Loudermilk,

were decent one-year additions, as is Esise Otomew. They're experienced players who have

real NFL snaps under their belts and in small dosages can be serviceable.

That's sound business from GM Omar Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidel, especially with a player like Icoale, who is very solid with New England in 2024 as a run defender.

Look, none of those three names are going to move the needle along the defensive line for the Steelers.

But Con and Widal have done well to add serviceable pieces to the group, giving them that cushion entering the 2025 NFL draft.
