In his recent mock draft, NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah had the Steelers taking the first running

back off the board with the 21st overall pick, Boise States Ashton Gentie. While many will argue

that Gentie is the best prospect at his position, the real question is whether any running

back can return on the investment of a first-round draft pick. With a skill position like running back, it should be easy

to project how a player will perform in the next level by looking at their college tape,

stats, and measurables. But it isn't that simple. There are other variables to consider,

including the most basic. Will the team drafting the running back be able to give him the chance

to succeed? Take Saqu Barclay as an example.

Drafted by the New York Giants with a second overall pick in the 2018 draft, no one questioned

his talent or athleticism. And in his rookie year, he proved it, averaging five yards per carry

and 11 Russian touchdowns. He racked up over 2,000 yards from scrimmage in 15 total touchdowns.
