Welcome to The Terrible Take, a daily segment telling Steeler Nation what's on our minds.

I'm Melanie Friedlander. As the East-West Shrine Bowl practices get

underway, the Steelers Depot crew has already been sitting down with players to talk about their

path to the NFL draft. This will be my fourth year covering the event, and one trend has caught

my eye this year. A majority of players are staying in school longer. As I review players'

college stats, it seems more and more of

them have five years of game logs. It's not just me. There's actually data to back up that impression.

As published in the Ringer last April, the average age of the 400 top NFL draft prospects

on Dane Bruegler's The Beast draft guide was 23 and a quarter. Football players aren't

declaring for the draft as young as they used to. So many players were limited to six games or less

during the 2020 season due to the COVID pandemic. The NCAA responded by allowing an extra year

of eligibility. Under prior rules, the athletes were allowed to play four seasons during a five-year period.

This was extended to six years for athletes who had their careers impacted by the pandemic.

Those football players who started in 2020 would be the last class to take advantage of that extension.

But the NCAA is reportedly reviewing the option of adding an extra year of eligibility

for all college

athletes sometime early this year.
