The news of left guard Isaac Samolle's pectoral injury was a tough blow to the offensive line of

the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday.

Fortunately, it doesn't appear to be a long-term injury, keeping him out roughly four weeks.

Still, it is tough losing your best offensive linemen early in the season, all while trying to get a new offense up to speed.

The Steelers have solid depth in place to try and plug the hole for the time being though. That's the good news. Based on

reporting from the Post-Cazette's Jerry Doolack on Wednesday night, the

Steelers are going to give Spencer Anderson the shot at left guard in the

absence of sayamalu early in the season.

That makes sense. He's been the top backup all off season there and he's performed well.

But this is a unique opportunity to get a good look at a guy the Steelers really like and have big plans for moving forward.

That being Mason McCormick.

McCormick, not Anderson, should get the first crack at starting in place of

sayamalu. After all, the belief is that McCormick is the starting right guard

of the future for the Steelers starting next season once James Daniels walks in free agency.

While the left guard and right guard are entirely different, it is a good time to get

McCormick NFL experience out of the shoot. He's had a strong summer and pre-season and has really

caught the attention of key decision makers for the Steelers, including team

president and owner Art Rooney II. He profiles as a key piece for the Steelers moving forward, so he

should get a bit of a runway now to show his stuff on the interior.

Having Anderson in that swing backup role would provide further depth too in case guys go down in-game.
