So far through two preseason games, the performance from second year offensive tackle

Broder Jones has been, well, very concerning. His technique

has looked poor from his footwork to his hand usage. His power, which was a huge calling

card coming out of Georgia, simply isn't there at the moment either.

Some of that could be attributed to the elbow injury he suffered on the first day of padded

practices at training camp, leading to the brace he has on his right arm currently. But what cannot be

attributed to the struggles is something that seems to be common discourse

around him currently, playing out a position at right tackle. You can point to a number of things with

Jones right now as issues, but him being at right tackle isn't one of them. A common argument is that he's out of position, one that is not natural to him.

That's ridiculous. Jones played nearly 700 snaps last season at right tackle for the Steelers with 639 coming in the regular

season and another 55 in the playoff loss to the bills. Since when did 700 snaps in a

season at one position not matter. Right tackle isn't new for Jones. He has said time

and time again he doesn't care what side he's on as long as he's out there. At some

point we have to believe the words he's saying.

If he were making the move from left to right tackle

for the first time this summer,

I'd understand that talk about being out of position

and not comfortable. But that isn't the case. This isn't last season. It wasn't an excuse then and it isn't one now.

Jones just needs to be better, period. If the elbow injury is that serious that it's

affecting his play, sit him down. If not, he needs to do his job. He's still young and learning. This is just a bump in the road, but it's one he needs to figure out how to get over and quickly.
