Not only as a sixth round pick, but also a player changing positions entering the NFL,

rookie safety Ryan Watts found himself

a bit behind the 8-ball for the Pittsburgh Steelers when it came to battling for a 53-man roster

spot. To Watts's credit, though, he took it all in stride and has done what he did throughout his time in college at Ohio State and Texas, put his head down and go to work, letting his play do the talking for him.

Now, coming out of training camp and with two preseason games left,

it feels as though Watts is moving closer and closer

to earning a roster spot for the black and gold, especially after head coach

Mike Tomlin's comments Wednesday regarding his rookie safety.

Tomlin praised Watts for his communication abilities in the secondary and stated that the Texas product is

headed in the right direction.

Those comments from Tomlin come after defensive coordinator Terrell Austin, praised him after

the preseason opener, stating to reporters earlier in the week

that he believes Watts will be a good player for the Steelers.

Watts, to his credit, has played well throughout training camp and the preseason.

He's made some plays on the ball in training camp, nearly had an interception against the Texans,

and thrived near the line of scrimmage as a box safety, making a nice run stop at the line of scrimmage in the loss.

While the top-for it safety seems set for the Steelers with Minka Fitzpatrick,

Deshaunte Casey, and Miles Kilbrue. Watts is doing everything right in his push for a 53-ran roster spot.
