During Thursday's practice, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed some interesting defensive wrinkles.

Ones you don't often see in camp where the base installation and fundamentals are usually

being wrapped.

During a third down period in the team's first two minute drill of camp, Pittsburgh's defense

showed a three outside linebacker package with T.J. Watt, Alex High Smith, and Nick Herbig on the field.

Herbig would align almost like a defensive tackle next to Watt who was in his typical

left outside linebacker spot.

They also showed an amoeba package with one defense alignment, four linebackers, including the

three aforementioned outside names, and 60 B's with Corey Trice, the Dime Defender, a really cool look.

Now, I don't want to pretend like these are brand new things.

Pittsburgh has used three outside linebacker groupings before, once when a Highsmith was a rookie and the following year when they brought in Melbourne Ingram.

But the alignment was different back then, a linebacker over the A gap and and a more run-heavy look, this is a passing situation.

And I know the Amiba look happened under Dick Lebow, but it's been years since seeing it.

Pittsburgh's talent in depth, especially among its

run seven, gives DC Terrell Austin plenty of options. And that's a great thing for

this defense to reach its ceiling as a top five unit.
