The Pittsburgh Steelers made a pair of roster deletions this week waving wide receiver

Denzel Mims followed by safety Trenton Thompson.

Mims might have been a bit unexpected but a second round bus of the jets who didn't play a snap last season.

These types of cuts they happen.

But Thompson, that was more of a headscratcher.

Per the Thursday wire sheet there was no designation so an injury was not the reason why the team let him go.

Thompson of course was never going to be an all-star but he looked like a

promising backup. Sign midway through camp last summer he immediately stood out with his size, hit power, and some decent ball scales.

After spending part of the year on the practice squad, he was called up when Pittsburgh was hit hard by injuries at safety.

despite hurting his neck.

He was not assured of a 2024 roster spot spot, but I liked his chances of pushing for one of the final

openings on the 53-man roster, or at the least returning to the practice squad and serving

as quality depth.

So why was he cut and why now?

As of this Thursday evening recording, there's no indication the team has even signed

anyone from the UFL like other teams are doing.
