One of the top five needs for the Steelers in the 2024 NFL draft and arguably their second biggest need outside of center is wide receiver. that

After having a room with a solid mix of veteran and young talent in 2023,

including Deontay Johnson, Alan Robinson II, George Pickens and Calvin Austin the third,

the two most veteran of that group are no longer on the roster. That leaves George Pickens

as the veteran of the group and the unquestioned wide receiver one.

While the need for a talented receiver is present, I wouldn't be too worried about the

Steelers ability to acquire one in the draft.

There are 17 receivers on Dane Bruggler's top 100 prospects list alone, for example.

During the pre-draft press conference on Monday afternoon, head coach Mike Tomlin said that they are comfortable

with the trajectory of the wide receiver group and specifically said that they are comfortable with the trajectory of the wide receiver group

and specifically said that they are comfortable with Pickens trajectory

both on and off the field as the experienced veteran of the group now.

He also talks about how receivers coming out of the draft are ready made these days due to the evolving nature of the game of football and the emphasis on 7 on 7 at the high school level.

That goes year round. Since 2000, there have been 17 receivers to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark in their rookie seasons.

Seven of those have come in the last five years alone and there is at least one almost every season these days.

I'm not saying that the Steelers need to find one of these 1,000-yard rookie guys,

though it would be nice, but it speaks to the talent level of the position in general

and the current trends around the league.

Sure, they could take one in the first round like Brian Thomas Jr.
