I'm Ross McCorkle.

The bulk of free agency moves have been made.

The NFL draft is a little more than three weeks away and still the Steelers have no certainty

surrounding the center position for their

2024 roster.

They overhauled the quarterback room and brought in a new offensive coordinator and they cannot

afford to take the risk of having the position be a weak link.

They touch the ball on every offensive play, after all, and in a lot of ways they are the brains

of the operation along the offensive line.

They seem set to draft one early on, but unless early on means round one, where centers typically

don't present the best value, then they will be in danger of missing out on one of the big

three that can conceivably step in and start early on as rookies.

Those being Duke's Graham Barton, West Virginia,

Zach Frazier, and Oregon's Jackson Powers Johnson.

They are a fair number of center needy teams

this year after the shuffling of free agency.

And with so few viable options to be early starters all it takes is one

team to start the run and create urgency for all the other teams targeting the position.

Based on the last 10 drafts an average of two centers are taken in the first two rounds, so maybe the Steelers are safe waiting until round two, but certainly by the third round, all three should be gone.

To complicate things, not every team likely views Barton as a center and his skill set in frame could land him as a tackle option with versatility to kick inside which could push him up certain teams boards.
