Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers spoke to the media on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning at the NFL

Owners Meeting in Orlando where they discuss rule

updates and other league matters each season. It was there that we got the first

official word straight from the source that Russell Wilson is in quote

poll position in the quarterback competition. Tomlin had multiple weeks to prepare for this statement and his choice of analogy is interesting to me.

Poll position is the most favorable position at the start of an automobile race, in the front and closest to the inside of the track.

So Tomlin is confirming that, yes, Wilson has the head start or the most favorable

position to start the season as quarterback won, but not every car that sits in that position goes on

to win the race, To further the analogy,

Tomman also stated that Justin Fields would be given the chance to compete whenever appropriate.

He also spoke highly of him as a player saying he oozes talent and potential.

He is coming in with a chance to learn behind Russell Wilson who he

models his game after and it is a win-win situation for the team. Either Wilson

firmly takes control of the job and plays well or field surprises and shows

he can be the quarterback of the future.

But I think Taman chose his words carefully and in that I do think there will be a true competition

whether that is in week one or later in the season. The Steelers proved last year

they are willing to ride the

hot ham with Mason Rudolph at the expense of their former first round draft pick.

Especially if they drop some packages for fields to play unlimited snaps as the backup
