Well they did it. The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to sign quarterback Russell Wilson on Wednesday

with the official start of free agency and the new league year.

In a lot of ways this move makes sense.

He's only going to cost them 1.21 million dollars per reports, which is the veteran minimum contract.

The Broncos are picking up the rest of the tab from the

guarantees given to him in the massive extension just two years ago. While this has

good odds of increasing the Steelers chances of being a competitive football team

in 2024 it creates even more question marks surrounding

the future of the position. Wilson only signed for one year and isn't going to come cheap as a free agent

next off-season if he performs well.

Kenny Pickett has two years left on his rookie contract but the

fifth year option decision comes next May. If Wilson starts the Steelers will

have no more on-field intel off which to make that decision, barring injury, of course.

While Pickett's first two years give the team no reason to have complete faith in his future,

it is troubling to think he may receive zero more chances until at least his contract year.

I can tell you this, it isn't going to feel

particularly good next off season if the plan is to go back to picket in 2025 and

if he does somehow become the quarterback that they drafted him in the first round

for the Steelers will have no

power over retaining him as he would be an unrestricted free agent. I suppose in that

unlikely scenario there is the franchise tag but that is quite a bit more
