There is a report from Tony Pauline on Sunday that the Steelers are willing to trade Deontay Johnson for the right price.

Then on Monday morning Steelers insider Mark

Kabbale said on a local radio show that he is hearing Johnson may be the one

looking to get out. Mike Taman often uses the We Want Volunteers Not not hostages line in this situation and

oblige the trade talk but Johnson fired off some tweets after the initial trade

article came out on Sunday saying it is what it is and then people just be talking. He only has one year left

on his contract from the two-year extension this dealer signed him to two off

seasons ago. On one hand the 2024 NFL draft is loaded with intriguing wide

receiver talent.

But on the other hand, that would just be creating another urgent need for the team that

already has a few of those, center, tackle, corner, to name a few.

Johnson has a $3 million roster bonus due to him in a couple weeks so if they trade him it will be before that happens at the same time that works against the Steelers as the recipient team would have to pay that bonus and also only have Johnson

under contract for one season. It would be wise for the Steelers to figure it

out for at least this season and have him depart the team when his contract

expires if possible.

There is potential compensatory pick value there in the future and that would likely

be higher than what they get for him in the present given his contract situation.

If they are serious about giving Kenny Pickett one more chance, it would be wise to make sure he has sufficient weapons around him, and the draft brings no guarantees if they are relying on that to replace Johnson.
