Senior Bowl Director Jim Naggi dropped an interesting tweet on Sunday pertaining to this year's NFL draft class.

He said that due to widespread use of the extra COVID year of Elagor, this year

of eligibility and the effects of NIL on keeping college players in college

there's a serious depth problem in this year's draft.

As a former NFL scout and given his responsibilities

to put together the Senior Bowl roster with as many draftable players as possible,

this is a big deal. He said the Senior Bowl draft board started to really fall apart in rounds 5 through 7.

Fortunately the Steelers have 5 picks in the top 4 rounds. They swap 4th and 5th round picks with the Los Angeles

Rams as part of a trade that sent Kevin Dalton to LA.

This positions the Steelers well, but puts extra pressure to get things right early on,

because after that second, fourth round pick, they will not be selecting until later in this sixth round.

By then, according to NAGI, teams will be drafting

undrafted free agent-type players. For the first time in a while the Steelers had every

drafted player contribute in 2023 other than Corey Trice Jr. who suffered a season ending injury in

training camp and even he was reportedly doing really well in the off season and

in line to be one of the top backups at the position for 2023. The

contributions from the rookie class really helped fill in some

of the Steelers weak points on the roster last season so the projected lack of

quality players beyond the fifth round could hamper the Steelers and every other team

for that matter next season.
