John Emile List was born on September 17, 1925, as the only child of German-American parents living in Bay City, Michigan.

In 1943, John, still a teenager, enlisted in the U.S. Army and began serving his time as a lab technician during World War II.

Three years later, he was discharged and attending the University of Michigan, where he

earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and his master's in accounting.

All of this, in addition to being an active member of the ROTC, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
