Summary
Elizabeth grew up in a family where psychic ability wasn’t unusual—it was simply understood. Seeing or sensing the dead was treated matter-of-factly, but there were rules. No séances. No Ouija boards. No opening doors you didn’t know how to close.
When she was eight years old, she broke those rules.
At a friend’s old colonial home in Alabama, three girls sat in a bright basement in the middle of the day and decided—out of boredom more than belief—to hold a séance. It felt harmless. Silly, even. Until a decorative bell mounted on the wall suddenly began ringing loudly, despite having no mechanism to do so.
Elizabeth ran. She didn’t return to that house for years, and the incident was never discussed again.
