Summary

The Grayzone’s Max Blumenthal discusses his reporting trip to Damascus in the aftermath of Syria's proxy war. He interviewed residents who were caught between Western and Gulf-backed extremist insurgents and the Syrian government’s war to retake territory, and who now struggle to recover under a US-led economic blockade. "They want to attack and intimidate people from the West who want to have cultural and personal contact with Syrians in the area where most Syrians live," Blumenthal says. "I went there and I took that opportunity to have contact with them because I’ll take any reasonable opportunity to break the media blockade in countries targeted with regime change, and to show my fellow citizens what’s on the other side of the corporate media and the US national security state’s information war." Guest: Max Blumenthal, Senior Editor of The Grayzone and author of "The Management of Savagery." And I understood the basic outlines and a lot of the details of the conflict in Syria.

And my book focused especially on the Washington's role in fueling the conflict and then

the repercussions in the West.

But what I came to understand from being in Damascus and really from spending time pretty

0:51.2

much on my own after attending a labor conference for two days, which was overseen

0:58.7

by the government, which gave me access to this territory, to an area that is pretty much

1:03.7

off limits to most Americans and most people in the West who just can't get visas, and

1:07.6

the government's very paranoid about that.

1:11.6

You know, just having, being able to spend several days in the old city in Damascus, staying

1:17.1

in a Christian area called Bab Sharkey, at the eastern most gate of Damascus' old city.

1:23.6

So sort of facing towards what are considered the eastern suburbs of Damascus, being in this historic area,

1:30.3

which is very culturally liberal. People go out and there's a big bar scene at night.

1:36.3

This is where Christians fled Roman persecution. It's where Saul became St. Paul.

1:41.3

There are Greek Orthodox churches that are hundreds and hundreds

1:46.4

of years old there, that, you know, when I was able to walk out across the highway outside

1:52.0

the Eastern Gate and get into those neighborhoods, which are very sensitive areas.

There are military checkpoints around them and when they saw a foreigner
