In April 1815, Mount Tambora, a volcano on the island of Sambawa in present-day Indonesia,

then a part of the Dutch East Indies, erupted in what is now believed to be the most powerful

volcanic eruption in recorded human history.

The volcano's eruption ejected around 10 cubic miles of dense material

into the atmosphere, and the ash from the eruption dispersed around the world, lowering global

temperatures in an event known as the Year Without a Summer in 1816. Global temperatures were lowered

by half a degree Celsius and triggered harvest failures and famine.

Whilst the effects of the eruption of Mount Tambora were disastrous, they also demonstrated

the potential cooling effects of injecting particles into the upper atmosphere, a process that

could be instigated deliberately in order to reduce global heating.

In today's episode, I spoke with Sophia A Men of Menace about her recent article in

the breakdown on the concept and history of solar geoengineering, or solar radiation

management as it's become known.

We talked about how the implementation of SRM is imagined, what the potentially catastrophic

side effects of such a project might be, and who
