On August 19, 1883, Jeannie DeValle gave birth in hospice to Gabrielle Bonner Chanel, whom one day the world would know by the name of

Coco Chanel, the founder and namesake of the Chanel brand, which still to this day, 130 years

later, does more than $15 billion in revenue each year. Though we currently know Chanel as an iconic

luxury name, the designer's origin stem from a melancholy and grief-stricken childhood.

Chanel was born into poverty in the French countryside. Her mother died when she was 11 years

old, and her father abandoned her to an orphanage. After a brief stint as a shop girl, Chanel

worked for a few years as a cafe singer. In her early 20s, she dreamed of designing clothes

and starting her own apparel line. But as an orphan,

with no education, title, or resources, this dream would seem ridiculous. But the dream wouldn't

die in Chanel. She knew she desperately needed guidance, particularly on the business and finance side.
