On May 13, 2015, Jose de Jesús de Nisa Guine had a birthday party.

It was small, just his parents and some family and friends.

They celebrated on the back patio of their modest home on an isolated stretch of coast in central Mexico.

WISE de Jesús was turning 31 years old.

They were celebrating a birthday, but they were also saying goodbye.

The day after the party, Jose would take a plane and a bus to the Mexican border and then attempt to cross the desert into the United States.

His goal was to reunite with his three young children who lived in Las Vegas with their mother.

Jose missed them terribly and for years he had dreamed of being near them again.

But just seven days after his party, Jose was dead in a U.S. immigration detention center.

It was a suicide, a suicide by a sphixiation to be more precise.

During the autopsy, the medical examiner found lodged deep in Jose's throat, a bunched up orange sock.

Jose had been in the E-Loy detention center in Arizona for just three days.

He didn't have a history of mental illness according to his family and he was coming to the U.S. with a purpose to be with his kids.
