When we think of the story of Robin Hood,

we think of a bunch of rowdy but good-natured guys hanging out in Sherwood Forest

waiting for an unsuspecting rich person to come along. In this version of the story Robin Hood is a hero who is only

an outlaw because he made enemies out of the most powerful bad guy in England at that time. Back in episode 30 I told you the story of

Richard the Lionheart and his little brother. This Richard was King Richard of England, who was more interested in fighting in the crusades

than ruling his kingdom. If you haven't heard that episode yet, you might want to go and listen to it after we're done with this one.

Well, when King Richard was away, his little brother, Prince John, was his substitute ruler, and John was not a good leader.

He was, well, he was really selfish and ambitious,

and he wanted to be king permanently.

He treated the subjects of England like they were his servants, and he

taxed them and he treated them really unfairly. You know, you guys, it's important to know that a good leader inspires and encourages those who look up to them.

Eventually Prince John's subjects grew to really despise him.

He was just so mean. It was against this type of tyranny and unfair treatment that the Robin Hood we know stood up against by robbing the rich to give to the poor.
