It's Granny McDuff, ready with a story.

So make yourselves comfy, and I'll begin. Thank you. Once upon a time, in a faraway land called Nara, which was, at the time, the capital of Japan, a prince by by the name of Toyonari, lived with his wife, who

was called Princess Murasaki.

They were a noble and good couple.

They had been married by their families, as was according to the custom at the time, and they lived together happily

ever since. And although their life was full, there was one thing they longed for that they

did not have. A child. After much thought, Toyonari and Murasaki decided to make a pilgrimage to the temple of the goddess of mercy at Hasei.

They believed that the mother of mercy would answer their prayers.

And after years of prayer, they hoped that Hase would come to them in the form of a beloved child.

So they went to the temple and stayed for a long time, offering incense and prayers every day, in hopes that the heavenly mother would grant them the desire of their lives.

And so it was that their prayer was answered.

At last a daughter was born to them, and she was the greatest joy of their hearts.

They decided to call her Hasehimi

to honour the goddess at Hasei who had given them this gift.

They raised her with care and love and tenderness,

and the child grew in strength and beauty and kindness.
