The late 1500s brought many European explorers to the shores of what they called the New World.

At the time, the Americas, as they came to be called, were populated by tribes of people

whose ancestors had come here to settle after the dispersion at the Tower of Babel.

No one is quite certain how many people lived in the Americas at the time of the European

Explorers, and this time period is the subject of debates and arguments between different

historical research groups.

We do know that in 1607, a group of English settlers came to the New World.

Other groups of English colonists had come before them, but no one had been able to establish

a lasting colony.

The group who came in 1607 were not families looking for a new life.

They were men and boys, mostly from the upper class in England, and they were searching

for the legendary riches of the New World.

They were convinced that there were gold and other treasures here, and they were looking

for an adventure.
