Hey Emerson, happy birthday. This one's for you.

Thanks to a stage play based loosely on his life, Alexander Hamilton has become an immensely popular American historical figure.

So who was this guy and how well does that famed stage play actually tell his story?

Well, to answer these questions, I'm going to tell you the real story of Alexander Hamilton.

And let you decide.

As a historian, I don't particularly care for embellished retellings of true historical events and the people who lived them.

For me, the modern music and lingo in particular takes away from the cultural authenticity of the time in which the story actually happened.

I tend to believe that real stories are usually so interesting and full of adventure.

They're far more sensational than anything that could be made up about them.

It takes a lot of intentionality to place ourselves into the time period in order to understand it fully

and therefore learn from it correctly.

But you guys, it's definitely worth it.

That's my two cents worth on the whole hip hop version of Revolutionary America.

It probably doesn't surprise you, right?
