Some houses don't feel wrong right away.

They don't announce themselves with cold spots or slamming doors. Sometimes the first

thing they do is simply let everything else fall apart. The house in Vernon was already

breaking the family long before anything strange showed itself. The walls didn't cause the

shouting, the silence, the distance that grew between parents and children, but it felt in hindsight

like the house learned from it, like it listened, like it watched the way people drifted

past one another without really seeing each other anymore. From the outside, it looked like any

other family home. Inside it held the weight of people who were tired, angry, distracted, or already planning

their exits, a father who had decided he was done, a mother quietly preparing for a future

she hadn't told her children about yet.

An older brother, gone as soon as he could legally disappear, numbing himself

wherever he landed. An older sister wrapped up in her own battles with no patience left for

anyone smaller or younger. And two younger girls trying to exist in the cracks between all of it.

It wasn't a house filled with warmth or safety. It was cramped,

tense, always loud in the wrong ways and silent in the others. Doors closed, voices raised,

long stretches where no one checked on anyone else because everyone assumed someone else would.

That's where it started.
