Summary

Every year, The Speaker Lab founder Grant Baldwin and coach Erick Rheam come onto the TSL show for an episode we call “The State of the Speaking Industry.” Grant and Erick use this time to zoom out and examine shifts in the last year and trends for the next year that affect speakers working on building their business this year. This is a chance to really dig deep into what’s going on in a variety of different industries and how that changes things up for all speakers, from aspiring to advanced. In episode 436 of The Speaker Lab podcast, we’re looking at the state of the speaking industry for 2023.

Exciting things are happening as the world emerges from the COVID-impacted era of virtual events into a new hybrid era. Some organizations are eager to get back to classic conferences with lots of personal interactions and face-to-face communication, while others are enjoying the efficiency afforded by shifting everything to zoom. At the same time, many sectors are hurting due to the economy, and speakers in those industries are hurting as a result. More than ever, it’s vital to get clear on some of the core tenets of our SPEAK framework: solving one specific problem for one specific audience.

Whether you’re a beginner, emerging, or experienced speaker, 2023 is bound to bring changes. With all this in mind, Grant and Erick share advice in this episode for every stage of launching and growing a speaking business. Let this episode put your fears at rest and energize your business plan for the upcoming year!

You’ll learn about…

  • Which audiences are showing potential for growth in 2023.
  • What virtual speaking can offer industries with continuing education requirements.
  • How to leverage gigs into partnerships that get you regular engagements.
  • How to manage and maintain momentum so it doesn’t overwhelm you.
  • How pivoting audiences can help you weather the economic storm.
  • Why the solutions you offer are more important than the story you tell.
  • Why clarity, consistency, and mentorship are must-haves for every speaker in 2023.
  • …and so much more!

Hey, Fran, Graham Baldwin here.

Hey, what if I told you that there was a single marketing asset that you could use to book tens of thousands of dollars in paid speaking gigs before you even have a website?

0:10.2

Well, that tool exists.

0:11.4

And Dan Irvin, one of the speakers on our team, used it to book over $36,000 in speaking gigs without a fancy website or any social media presence.

0:19.6

Even better, we're going to teach you exactly how

0:22.1

to create that tool for your speaking business in under an hour. For a limited time, we're going to

0:26.9

be offering a free live training on how to build and use this marketing asset to start booking

0:31.9

paid gigs in just a few weeks. If you want to hear more, go to thespeakalab.com slash marketing.

Hey, what's up, Rand's Graham Baldwin here. So excited to have you here today for a very

0:52.5

important episode of the Speakelab podcast. Now, every year, my buddy, Eric Ream and I get on the podcast for an episode that we call the state of the speaking industry. And this is where we talk about how things have changed in the speaking industry and event space and what's on the horizon for professional speakers in the months to come. And so that's what we're going to be doing here today is we're going to be talking about the state of the speaking industry for 2023. We'd like to zoom out, talk about the big picture a little bit. And also Eric's going to share some insights from recent speaking engagement and also what he's seeing that's happening on the ground and the front lines. There's a lot to be excited about, especially with the tension between the popularity of virtual events, the desire to return to

1:27.8

holding in-person conferences as well. And so some industries are shifting entirely to virtual.

1:32.3

Some are trying to maintain a balance between both. And some are just fired up to get back to

1:36.2

shaking hands, making friends, kissing babies, all that kind of good stuff that we've missed out

1:39.9

on the past couple of years. Now, there's some new unexpected areas in need of solution that good speakers can deliver, and there's a lot of great opportunities for beginner speakers to take by the horns and dive in as well. Now, don't get me wrong, though, we're not going to sugarcoat things. I know that the economy is, you know, that's big in the news right now, okay? And so a lot of industries and speakers are taking a hit in some ways. And so we're going to talk about those challenges to how they affect our recommendations for

2:03.5

aspiring speakers to focus on as they look at the year ahead and decide how to launch or

2:08.2

accelerate your business. And in some ways, it's a scary time to start on your own in a new

2:13.0

and unknown territory. So hopefully this episode with Eric and myself is going to help you

2:16.8

feel a little bit more confident going into 2023, whether this is your first or your 100th year speaking. Okay,

2:23.0

maybe not 100th, but you get the idea. So let's get right to it. Here's my conversation with

2:26.8

Eric Rame talking about the state of the speaking industry in 2023. Enjoy.
