The premise of cleansing is popular in alternative medicine circles, seen as one of the most important ways to get and stay healthy. But is it really? Is our modern take on cleansing the same as it was traditionally? And most importantly, is cleansing really appropriate for anyone and everyone? We'll cover all that and more in our exploration of the spring cleanse.Β
Here's what I'll cover:
-
What happens in the spring transition that necessitates a cleanse?
-
The qualities that predominate in winter and what that means for you
-
The equinox transitions and how patterns in nature affect your health
-
What to focus on in a spring cleanse
-
Herbal categories in the spring cleanse: alteratives, nutritives and why they're important
-

| 0:36.4 | You know, spring is coming up around the corner here. |
| 0:40.6 | And this is a topic that is oftentimes brought up in discussion in terms of traditional |
| 0:48.6 | Western herbal medicine. It's a question that I get a lot from students and people that follow the channel in terms of |
| 0:58.5 | what is the spring cleanse, what herbs fit into that category, should I do it, why do I do it, |
| 1:06.1 | etc. and so on. So I thought I'd take some time to talk about this subject a little bit. So |
| 1:11.9 | the general premise of the spring cleanse is basically it goes like this. Okay. So if we think |
| 1:21.3 | about this in terms of how people used to traditionally live, I think it makes a lot of sense. |
| 1:30.7 | And the premise is, okay, it's been, you're emerging out of a long, cold winter. |

| 1:48.8 | The availability of fresh food during the wintertime was limited. |
| 1:53.5 | So a lot of people were living off of sundries, preserves, canned food, dehydrated food, smoked food, and most |
| 2:06.9 | likely a lot of meat, you know, especially if you live up north where it gets very cold and |
| 2:13.1 | it's very difficult to grow things, probably not a ton of fresh leafy greens coming out of the gardens, |
| 2:21.4 | right? We're talking probably a substantial amount of root vegetables that tend to keep a little |
| 2:29.9 | bit better throughout the winter, right? Your potatoes and your carrots and your beats and your |
| 2:35.9 | salariac and all of those roots that tend to keep a lot longer in a cold storage or |
| 2:42.7 | things like that. So you've been eating nothing but meat and sundries and dehydrated preserved food all winter long. |
