Once upon a time, there lived a little girl called Evelyn. She was an orphan and had been

sent to live with her godmother in a cottage at the edge of town.

Evelyn's godmother made her living by spinning and weaving and sewing.

She taught Evelyn all things good and made sure she was especially well versed in spinning and weaving and sewing.

Evelyn grew up. She was now a girl of 18. Her godmother was older now and knew her time was coming to an end.

Carry love in you always, my dear daughter.

She told Evelyn, the house is now yours, and I leave you my spindle, shuttle and needle.

They will help you earn your bread.

And when her godmother's time had come to an end, she wept for three days.

Then Evelyn got up and got to work.

She spun and she wove and she sewed.

She sold cloth, shirts, dresses, and there was always a buyer for each piece, almost as soon as she had finished it.

She wanted for nothing. She had a roof over her head and food in her mouth.

Evelyn was content.

It was just around this time that the son of the king, Prince Aldous,

was travelling around the country searching for a bride.

He was told by the king's advisers not to choose a poor wife, and the prince himself

did not want a rich one. He told himself, my wife shall be the poorest and at the same time,

the richest. Finally, he arrived in the village where Evelyn lived.

Prince Aldous asked the same question he had asked in every place they had stopped.
