Summary

Peter Gelderloos joins us again to discuss his recent book "The Solutions are Already Here: Strategies for Ecological Revolution from Below". The conversation is framed around ecological collapse, the complexity of tackling these issues, and detangling climate change from the conversations around the carbon footprint. How does capitalism utilize climate change to continue its path to exploit the resources on the planet through tools like the green new deal, and how do we respond to this greenwashing?   We explore the concept of community-building, the power of utopia, and what kind of tools are at our disposal to find ways to gum up the system destroying the ecosystem.   You can get Peter's book from Pluto Press: https://www.plutobooks.com/ Find Peter on Twitter @PeterGelderloos     Support this podcast through Patreon at www.patreon.com/poorprolesalmanac

Hi there and welcome back to the Porpo's Almanac. I'm your host, Andy, and today we have one of our first, possibly our first repeat guests, Peter Gelderlose.

0:24.0

Since we spoke last year, he's written a book titled The Solutions Are Already Here, Strategies for Ecological Solutions from Below, published by Pluto Press.

0:32.9

The book highlights the shortfalls of capitalism in finding solutions for climate change and points to

0:37.7

hundreds of examples of resistance across the globe, while diving deep into various examples

0:42.3

which we can view to find new tools for resistance. Fair warning, we had some internet issues

0:48.0

during the interview, so I apologize if any of the episode seems a little disjointed, or if

0:53.1

there are moments of poor sound quality.

0:55.0

We were able to figure it out eventually. You can find Peter on Twitter, and his book is

0:59.0

available at most places online. I'm sure y'all will enjoy this conversation. I always walk

1:04.1

away from talking with Peter feeling inspired, and I'm sure you will too.

1:12.2

Peter, thanks so much for taking some time to chat.

1:14.9

Folks hopefully are familiar with you at this point.

1:16.7

You've been on before.

1:18.0

But we're here to talk about one of your books today.

1:20.0

So I don't know if you could just tell us a quick little snippet about your book

1:23.4

and maybe a little bit why you decided it was important to write.

1:26.5

So, yeah, my latest book is The Solutions Are Already Here, and obviously it's not a surprising

1:32.8

position to think that climate change or the ecological crisis are really large and urgent

1:40.2

problems, and it's also not that uncommon these days, once again, to be critical of

1:48.1

or totally opposed to capitalism. Something that has very much been worrying me, aside from all

1:53.4

of just the horribly devastating effects of capitalism on human society and on the life systems of the planet and all the other living things on the planet,

2:04.6

is that the way we're being taught to understand the ecological crisis and to respond to it
