Tom how did this story first come across your radar?

Initially we were approached by a human rights organization to say there might be this

young woman who would like to talk about what had been happening to her sister.

Tom Leavitt is the commissioning editor of the Guardian's

Rights and Freedom series.

We didn't know anything beyond the fact that Manahal, this young Saudi woman had been detained for more than a year on unknown charges.

One of her sisters was living in the UK and might be willing to meet and talk to us.

For the past few months he's been talking to a young woman called Falsia Alartabe.

She's from Saudi Arabia, though she can't go back there anymore. It's too dangerous.

Recently, Tom went to meet her where she lives now in Edinburgh, Falsia's husband welcomed him with a song played

on an instrument called Aude.

It's one of the few things they were able to bring with them from home.
