If you look at a map of Ukraine, the city of Maruipal

appears as just a tiny dot on the country's south-eastern coast.

But it's important as a port city

from which goods flow in and out of the country

and its geographical position next to Crimea,

which Russia controls,

has made it a key target in Putin's war on Ukraine.

Over the past four weeks,

the Russian army has been trying to bomb this city

of almost half a million people into submission.

It's not clear how many people have died.

Many of their bodies lie in the streets

or are buried in the rubble of the buildings

where they were trying to find shelter.

Somehow, for now at least,

the Ukrainian army is holding out.

It's 3,000 soldiers against the 14,000 Russian fighters
