Summary

As the year comes to a close, two beautiful stories about stepping back, reflecting and moving forward from Phil Herbert and N.S. David. “I had one roll of film for the whole trip, which gave me eight frames. Nine if I was lucky,” begins Phil.  “I’ve done my fair share of wishing I was warm in my bed while strapped to the side of a granite monolith at 12,000 feet. I’ve torn holes in my clothes and my skin, I’ve broken bones,” writes N.S. as she explores the complexities of sharing her joys with her mother and their relationship. I've got a cold. It actually hasn't happened that often, but, man, got one right now and I've

0:07.4

got to record. I'm not a fan of the month of November. Like, I've got beef with it. There's the

0:15.8

Seattle rain. That doesn't help. It's not quite falling as snow in the mountains. But it's not really that.

It's how my body reacts to the changing and the loss of the light. Something shifts. And during that

0:28.4

month, I just kind of like lose motivation to be outside. Even though rationally, I know I want to be

0:34.1

out doing stuff. I'm more tired than normal. When I do lace up the running shoes,

0:39.8

it feels more like work than what I want to be doing. And I never regret those runs or night

0:47.0

mountain bike rides, but I'm also kind of glad when they're done, like I've upheld my end of a bargain.

I missed this long summer days and bright mornings,

0:56.3

and the fall's gentle warmth amongst the dug firs,

0:59.0

and final pleasant swims in my local rivers.

1:02.5

But in November, I'd rather just sleep in

1:04.3

than be outside before work in the dark,

1:07.5

the cold, and the rain.

1:09.8

But slowly, my body adjusts to the shifting light, and sometime just after Thanksgiving, I

1:15.5

emerge into December, one of my favorite times a year, feeling like my normal self.

Our community is sending eager texts about weather reports and awaits the arrival of the

1:25.6

season's first powerful winter storms. Here in town, Seattle dresses itself in lights to stand out against the dark,

1:32.3

and my nighttime runs get a little more pleasant, and somewhere in the rhythm,

1:36.3

I stop wishing for the summer or the fall or the spring.

1:39.3

I get excited to mountain biking the dark, and I'm just grateful for it all.

1:45.2

Even November.
