Hey everybody, welcome to Health Theory.

0:04.8

Today's guest is Dom DeGastino, PhD.

0:07.8

He is a neuroscientist and physiologist who's pretty much established himself as the

0:12.5

King of Keto.

0:13.8

He's also a researcher who's not only helped some of the world's most extraordinary

0:18.0

athletes push their limits, but he's also worked with cutting-edge organizations such as NASA

0:22.7

and the US military to develop protocols to help ultra-elite operators thrive in some

0:27.9

of the most hostile conditions imaginable.

0:31.1

Not one to just sit on the sidelines, he himself has gone through some of these protocols,

0:35.2

including becoming a full-fledged aquanaut by spending ten full days underwater.

0:40.8

And what I want to know is it'd be pretty easy for you at this point to just sit back,

0:45.9

do some research, what drives you to do things like spending ten days underwater.

0:51.2

Well, I've always had an interest in environmental extremes and pushing the limits outside of

0:58.9

academia, outside of my kind of normal wheelhouse to go out in the field and experiment with

1:06.0

the things that we're doing in the lab and on rats and mice and in cell culture to see

1:10.7

the real world applications when it comes to implementation.

1:14.4

I was focused on how our brain controls our physiology, so that was really the main focus

1:19.0

of my PhD work.

1:20.3

I transitioned into studying why the brain actually has seizures, so the mechanisms and

1:26.9

sort of the molecular mechanisms, why we have seizures under those conditions.

1:31.1

And as I moved along in that research, it became more interesting to me to develop not only

1:37.4

how to predict these seizures, why they occur, but to develop mitigation strategies.
