There are certain stories that don't begin with something dramatic, no seance, no Ouija board, no forbidden ritual in a dark room.

Sometimes they begin with something far more ordinary, like a sleepover.

She was in middle school when it started, though at the time she didn't think of it as a beginning.

Her parents had just divorced, and she and her two sisters, triplets, were adjusting

to a new house, a new school, and a new version of their lives. The air in the home felt different,

but that could have been explained away by stress. Divorce does that to a house. It settles into

the walls. The sleepover happened sometime that year.

A friend mentioned that her house was haunted, two children, an older man. The family had researched it,

she said. There were stories, as young teenagers often do. They treated it like an eerie novelty.

But while everyone else seemed amused, she felt something else entirely. Not fear, exactly, more like pressure, a heightened

awareness, as if someone had stepped into the room and was standing too close behind her.

She brushed it off.

When you're 12, you don't want to be the overly sensitive one.

You especially don't want to be the girl who feels things.

But when she went home, the feeling didn't stay behind.

It followed.

At first it was subtle, footsteps when no one was walking, the faint sound of movement in the hallway long after her sisters had gone to bed. She told herself she was imagining it. New house, new noises, houses settle, pipes expand, wood shifts. Then one afternoon, sitting at her desk, she watched her hairbrush lift off the surface and fall to the floor.

There had been no breeze, no movement of her arm.

It simply rose and dropped.

She stared at it for a long moment before picking it up, placing it back on the desk, and deciding not to tell anyone.
