Whatever you think about Amazon's Ring of Power series, it's reignited interest in the

work and worldview of J.R.R. Tolkien.

For example, the idea of eucotastrophe, or a sudden joyous turn of events.

The best stories wrote Tolkien acknowledged the seriousness of evil, but give us a fleeting

glimpse of joy beyond the walls of the world.

Writing recently for the BBC, journalist Richard Fisher suggests that humans need that

kind of inspiration and hope in order to even survive.

But the idea of eucotastrophe doesn't make sense if the universe is an accident, if humans

have no value, and if our only hope lies in the prospect of human progress.

In other words, Tolkien's words only make sense in light of Tolkien's worldview.

Here's how he put it, quote,

The birth of Christ is the eucotastrophe of man's history.

The resurrection is the eucotastrophe of the story of the incarnation.

To reject it leads you through to sadness or to wrath.
