Summary

The Spiritual Side of Speaking: How to speak from the body, not the head.

In this episode, I sit down with Caroline Goyder — a globally respected voice expert who’s worked with world leaders, A-list actors, and high-stakes communicators — to dig into what real speaking looks like when presence is the foundation. We explore how your voice is more than technique: it’s a physical expression of breath, emotion, and grounded attention. Caroline shares stories from her work, how she helped people find authentic confidence under pressure, and offers practices to help us speak more from Being than from performance.

and connect for real. Whether you speak on stage, in meetings or just want to feel more yourself

when you open your mouth, this one is full of gems. Caroline, it's lovely to see you. Happy Friday to

you. How are you?

0:45.1

Thank you, Simon. I'm good. I'm good. I've been to my Pilates. I've had a nice walk. I'm feeling relaxed, which is all good voice stuff, which we'll probably get to.

0:55.4

Well, that was the first thought that came in when you said about Pilates. Having watched your video on your website, which, as I've already said to you, I found actually quite moving in a way.

0:56.6

Like, it's a bit magical.

1:02.6

And there are these bits where, for example, you're pointing to the belly and different parts. And so clearly that does relate to what you mentioned in terms of Pilates.

1:08.1

But gravitas is the word, right? Gravitars. It's a funny word. Some people,

1:16.2

some people hate it. So what is Grevitas? Well, right, where do we start? I think the people that

1:22.2

hate it think it's a serious word for serious people, you know, and in this country, that means

1:28.7

publicly educated schoolboys or, you know, it's kind of, it has for some people connotations

1:34.2

of an old world and possibly rich people with power. But I think for me, we democratise it.

1:44.1

Gravitast just means grounded presence.

1:47.1

Oh, I like that. Grounded presence. So let's let that land. Oh, that's nice. Grounded presence.

1:51.7

That's beautiful. Sorry, carry on. Well, and the funny thing is that the reason I'm kind of passionate about

1:57.6

it is because I didn't have that for a long time and still sometimes

2:01.5

don't. It's very, very easy for me to get off my center and get stuck in my head. And my whole

2:10.8

journey from drama school on was about, oh, you're in your head, you're in your head, you're not

2:14.5

present, you're not centered, your voice is too high, your breath is too high. And the funny thing is that I've been learning how to get grounded
