I don't know where Jonah is off to, but I am

in command of the microphone for at least an hour or so. And I think we're going to have a fun

conversation today. Our guest is Dan Wong, who has a new book about the United States and China.

It is called Breakneck. And I think you will enjoy our talk. Dan Wong, welcome to the

remnant. Hi, Kevin. So what's your book about? My book called Breakneck is Breakneck China's quest

to engineer the future. It's an exploration of spending six years in China between 2017 to

2023, feeling like I witnessed quite a lot of interesting events

from Donald Trump's first trade war to the growing repression and consolidation of power

under Xi Jinping, as well as new technological breakthroughs out of China, all culminating

with zero COVID, all three years which I lived through in China

from the beginning of the Wuhan outbreak all the way down to the collapse when I was living

in China in the end of 2022. And I try to come up with a new framework for thinking about the

U.S. and China that goes beyond these political science terms like

socialist or capitalist or neoliberal, whatever that means to describe these two big countries.
