Thank you. True Crime Podcast. In the 1980s, conspiracy theories that children were becoming victims of satanic rituals

began to spread like wildfire, and mistrust fueled anxiety

in schools and neighborhoods across the country. Institutions, law enforcement agencies,

and families alike were overcome with fear. This became known as the Satanic panic.

The moral panic permeated through news coverage, entertainment media, pop culture,

and even prominent trials at the time, and continues to have a lasting impact today.

Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Grand Valley State University, Mary DeYoung,

joins me today for a look at the factors that led

to the rise of the satanic panic and the impact that such fears left on the country.

So, Professor, before we begin, it's important that we understand what a moral panic is.

Can you help define that for those of us who are unfamiliar with that

phrase? Yes, I can. Moral panic is a sociological term for a collective reaction to social stresses
