0:24.2	listeners and many of you, if you've been following the podcast for the past two or three years,
0:29.5	have not heard these posts and these are short answers to tough theological and apologetics questions.
0:35.2	So we're going to be bringing a new one to you every day during sabbatical.
0:38.8	Here's today's. In the purest sense of the word, literally no one takes the Bible literally.
0:55.8	No one, literally.
0:57.8	Don't get me wrong, most evangelicals would probably say they do in fact read the Bible literally.
1:03.2	According to a 2011 Gallup poll, 41% of Protestants make that claim,
1:08.8	but I suspect it all comes down to what they mean by the word literal. If someone asked me if I read
1:14.7	the Bible literally I would answer yes, but to read it literally doesn't mean I
1:18.9	take everything in it literally. This is why I'm always a little stunned when skeptics and
1:24.0	progressive Christians demean evangelicals by characterizing them as
1:27.4	literalists. I always wonder what do they think that means? Is it just another way of
1:32.3	saying fundamentalist? For example, What do they think that means? Is it just another way of saying,
1:33.0	Fundamentalist?
1:34.4	For example, if you Google,
1:36.0	take the Bible literally, the first article that pops up
1:39.2	is a piece written for the Huffington Post
1:41.4	by spiritual teacher Steve McSway. In it he asserts that fundamentalist
